You are invited!

At St. Mark's, we seek to be relevant witnesses to the power of God's love. Through praise and prayer in worship, Bible study and spiritual nurture, and active service through ministries of outreach we gain deeper meaning for life. If you are looking for a Church home you are invited to make your home here! We offer a traditional worship service at 9:30 am and contemporary worship service at 11:15 am.

Lenten Worship & Study

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY

The Wednesday Bible study will have a six week Lenten program starting February 22. Jesus of Nazareth is a beautifully vivid cinema portrayal of Jesus’ life. Book Study: FORTY DAYS OF FRUITFUL LIVING

“We overestimate our capacity to handle things all by ourselves, and we underestimate the power of community to help. Belonging to a caring community, we discover a sustenance that does not answer all our questions, but which keeps us connected, rooted, grounded. When the worst happens, God doesn’t promise us an answer; God provides us a relationship.”
This comes from day 21 of Bishop Robert Schnase’s insightful daily devotional Forty Days of Fruitful Living: Practicing a Life of Grace. This book is a reflective and useful guide to living a Christian life in 2012, and it is St. Mark’s daily devotional for this Lenten season.
You may buy the book to read and study on your own, or join an afternoon or evening Lenten study group. Weekly study groups will meet on Mondays at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., starting February 27. Books are available for $8 in the church office.

SUNDAY SCHOOL MISSION PROJECT

During Lent, the congregation and Sunday School children are asked to collect food items such as macaroni and cheese, pork and beans, spaghetti sauce, and pasta for the Christian Community Service Agency (CCSA). In addition to collecting food we are asking children to pick up trash in their neighborhood for a “clean neighborhood” project. All of the food items should be brought to church on April 1, so the children can deliver them in wagons to CCSA. After the delivery the children will spend a little time picking up trash at the park across from the church.

LENTEN WORSHIP

During Lent there will be two special Sunday evening worship services, March 4 and March 18, led by the Lay Speakers of St. Mark’s. Both worship services will begin at 6 p.m. in the Sanctuary and conclude around 6:45 p.m.

Keeping in Touch

Dear Friends,

craig

We often talk about "new beginnings" or "new life," and what that means.  We attempt to discern a picture of what it might look like to experience "new life" or a "new beginning."

Of course, we never quite have a precise picture--and that's a reason we talk about it so much.  In this context, Transfiguration Sunday is a special day on the church calendar.  The text tells of an experience which only one participant seems to understand.  The message seems to be that the only thing we can see clearly is that there is something new, and that the old has passed away.  It's what happens then that matters.

Sometimes our attention to the experience itself detracts from its meaning, which is manifest not in the experience itself, but in the results of the experience.  As in, "what happens next?"

After the Transfiguration, what happens next for us is Lent, which begins with a 7 p.m. service in the Sanctuary on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd.  That service will include music, prayer, a brief homily, and the imposition of ashes.  The liturgy calls us to come together and face up to some very, very basic things about ourselves: that we are human, mortal and fallible.  We do this to begin a 40-day season during which we reflect on our lives, our relationships with each other, and our relationship with God.

As a guide during Lent, you're invited to use the new daily devotional Forty Days of Fruitful Living: Practicing a Life of Grace, available through the church office.  If, in addition to your daily reading, you'd like to be part of a weekly study group, we'll have two: Mondays at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., starting February 27th.

This Sunday our focus is the story of the Transfiguration, and what happens next.  See you in church!

Craig
